Latchy
I work on canal restoration in Gloucestershire and have used puddling Blue) clay on sealing an culvert, this was carried out by compressing the clay into the joints, very similar to repointing brickwork.
The Waterways Recovery Group (Wergies) might be the best people to contact as they have method statements for most canal based activities.
Normally puddling on a canal wall would be carried out with an excavator and the bucket used to compress the clay into the side of the waterway.

And that there is almost always someone else who knows how it is/should be done. The usefulness of these forums is amazing.

Yes it sad when you retire and the wife won't let you stay at home and put on your slippers for a well earned rest.
Volunteering on a canal restoration is very rewarding and when you see the end result and a lock is filled with water after 70 years of laying derelict and a boat finally passes through the lock it makes you proud to say I had a hand in that. It is also good as on heritage locks we have to do it the old ways including using lime mortar with all its associated hazards.
