Good afternoon everyone, I’m thinking about doing some associate work next year and wondered if any of you had any advice? What are the main pros and cons and are there any pitfalls to watch out for?
Thanks in advance.

What sort of work are you considering, what industry? I am just about to leave my full time employer for another role. They don't want me to leave so they have offered me occasional consultancy work for a fixed day rate. Make sure you have the skills, knowledge, attitude, and experience before you take something on. PI insurance is essential as well. It is available through the IOSH extras site on here and I think it is a very good deal.

Thanks for that – I do contract work at the moment so I’ve got all the Ltd company and insurance stuff in place. Associate work looks ideal but I’m wondering what, if any, disadvantages there are.

Much lower rates but no prospecting & sales time.
No real opportunity to get close to the customer, rarely any opportunity to develop further work, no continuity but great for filling gaps in the income stream. In my experience no bad debts.
Be prepared to turn up to do the work only to find that the customer's expectations are different from the instructions.

As David Bannister said; a good gap filler at a reasonable day rate is all you will get. I did get a lot of very easy days, when the client had nothing for me to do; turn up at 8.30 and drip fed coffee until 12.30, taken for lunch and then reviewed one risk assessment. Another day finished at 10.45. Nice for a short while, but I felt completely isolated from the businesses and realised quickly that I like (or need) to be part of a team.

Make sure you have adequate insurance, unless the company you are doing the work for will cover you. When I did associate work I had to have my own insurance.
