Within the country that I live/work any contractors that work with asbestos containing materials must be covered under their public liability insurance for these works? is this the same within in the Uk? Also we as a company can not have any asbestos surveys or associated works go through our books, it must go direct to the client. This causes big headaches with surveyors and architects, has anyone else come across this?

In the UK there is as far as I remember no compulsory requirement for PL only EL; so that would be a no It is quite common for companies such as chartered surveyors to fee invoice their clients directly for their time to arrange a contractor and the contractors to work directly for the client; so that would be a yes

So even if the requirement in the UK is employers liability insurance, most insurance companies wont include asbestos works as standard and would of course require a higher premium paid? so begs the question how many contractors actually carry out asbestos related works without being suitably covered.

It depends on you type and level of work. You are going to pay a higher premium for asbestos works in you are an HSE licensed contractor who undertakes licensed works. If you are a small outfit who only carries out un-licensed notifiable, or un-licensed non-notifiable works and this amount to, say 5% of your total works you are going to pay less. I would suggest seeking to your insurers. They would probably ask how much of your work is made up of work with assy and what level of work you are doing!

Possibily quite a few. Clients & procurment depts should note what John ruskin had to say on the matter: “There is nothing in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and he who considers price only is that man's lawful prey.”
