Hi all,
I'm looking at writing up our 2015 objectives and targets and I'm looking for a little help on things I can add besides working towards zero accidents, also examples of ways to measure using SMART. Ideas anyone?

SMART targets have to be measurable and ideally easy to check.
I like to use things like toolbox talks as they either happen or they don't and you can then do a qualitative check by asking attendees what messages were received to measure effectiveness.
Similarly PPE , its either on or its not.

Zero accidents and SMART objectives is an oxymoron if I have ever heard one! Moving on...Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time scaled. So you need to look at Leading Indicators (inspections, audits, training, TBTs, etc) and Lagging Indicators (AFR/IFR, severity, loss control, etc) and decide what best suits your organisation.

I have done this in the past as a senior manager. My approach was to have 8 ish (10 max) KPIs and have these a 50/50 mix of proactive and reactive measures. Far too many people rely on REACTING to accidents etc and not enough time PREVENTING them, in my experience.

Forgot to say............ make "zero accidents" your "aim" in eg the policy statement but never your "target"

SPR is depend on to scale and nature of organization that you are working...I remember i found one of the oil service provider QHSE programme in the internet where are KPI for every single department were defined ...
I suggest do not make it complicated and consider your organization Safety Culture as well.

Unfortunately the 18001 standard uses the term objectives only and this is to me a display of lack of understanding by the writers of the standard. For me objectives are always the overarching matters and should normally be set either into your policy statement or a similar principal document describing your policy. Targets are then a subset through which you are identifying how you will achieve a step towards the achievement of an objective. eg an objective may be to ensure adequate training for all staff, the targets may then identify the specific training to be provided that year, to whom, by what date and who is responsible for monitoring and implementing the training and the director responsible to ensure it is achieved.
Look at your policy first and if you cannot identify clear objectives then clearly you need to start here with a target to review and revise the policy such that company H&S objectives are clearly stated.
Simples :-)

Hi. For clarity - are these targets / objectives for the organisation, the safety service, or you?
