Hi, I hope someone might be able to point me in the write direction. My manager has asked me to look into the Gold Standard in EHS and report back to him. I have not heard of this before any ideas?

Ive been working in EHS for 10 years and havent heard of it either..:) Maybe he could be refering to something like OHAS 18001 which could be looked at as a high standard in regards to safety management systems

I've not heard of a gold standard in EHS as a specific scheme or standard. My interpretation would be that he wants to meet the standards & legislation, then push that bit further. In some ways similar to the myth that HSE have gold plated the UK legislation when implemting EU Directives. The other option of course, just ask your Manager what he means as you haven't heard of this standard.

I suggest that what he's looking for is an organisation that exhibits 'best practice' in EHS management. Some years ago Du Pont was typically quoted in this area, but I suggest it's all a bit too vague. Du Pont was indeed very good, but was their performance uniform at every location and in every aspect? They actually now have quite a line of 'products' that they market but your manager would be foolish if he/she believed that you can buy 'excellence' off the shelf. There's tons of evidence that outstanding performance is linked to organisational culture and also that culture takes years to change and develop, not days or months. But maybe the request wasn't so much for your manager, but targeted at getting you thinking, and using your contacts - as indeed you are doing by your initial posting? If he/she is serious, then a way forward is to identify one or more 'excellent EHS performers' in your specific sector (perhaps ask your regulator for ideas?) Then contact them and see if they will let a small group from your organisation you do a 'benchmarking visit' to identify what is different about what they do and how they do it from the standards you are familiar with?
