I sincerely hope you mean portable fire appliances i.e. Extinguishers etc. As it must be too late to install sprinklers?

What you need is a fire risk assessment before the premises are occupied and to do that you need a competent fire risk assessor. Not necessarily someone who is an all singing all dancing member of a a fire risk assessment register, depends upon the size and occupancy of the premises.

That fra will determine what fire protection is required.

More information from you may be helpful, re size, type of premises, what is intended to go into it, processes etc.

Many thanks for this information, the site is a waste recycling facility, yes I am aware that the fire protection should have gone in before the plant was installed and up and running.

A Fire risk assessment has been conducted, however, the insurance company have insisted that the fire protection goes in, hence the question in relation to CDM!

I'll try and give you a more helpful answer...

CDM applies to refurbishment, redecoration etc (see Regulation 2: http://www.legislation.g...07/320/regulation/2/made).

I you installation is going to involve fitting an alarm system, meaning attaching to walls, wiring in, connecting to mains powers, installing sprinklers and other more in depth works, then yes it will be CDM notifiable IF the work will take longer than 30 days or 500 person days. To quote the above mentioned legislation:

"construction work” means the carrying out of any building, civil engineering or engineering construction work and includes—

(a) the construction, alteration, conversion, fitting out, commissioning, renovation, repair, upkeep, redecoration or other maintenance (including cleaning which involves the use of water or an abrasive at high pressure or the use of corrosive or toxic substances), de-commissioning, demolition or dismantling of a structure; "

I hope that helps!
