Good Morning All, One of our employees goes to college on day release to undergo training to fulfil part of his requirements for his job role. On his way back from college going to home he was involved in an accident, which resulted in him going to hospital with fractures in his foot and was subsequently operated on. He will be off work for a amount of time as of yet unknown. Would this still be classed as a reportable statistic for the company as he was going home? Additionally reportable for RIDDOR as well? I have checked the HSE website from link someone kindly put on a previous post about RIDDOR. The HSE states an accident on the road is not reportable as the police will do their part. I am still waiting on further information as this only came to light this morning. If anyone can point in the right direction for further reading/guidance on this matter I would appreciate it. This is not something we come across that often and I want to make sure that I report it correctly to all depts. I will also be doing some refresher studying on this as well. Thank you.

Its up to each company what they report internally - what do your policies and procedures say about reporting accidents? I would report it internally and look at root cause to see if there was anything we could do to minimise likelihood of reoccurrence; eg were shift patterns an issue etc etc etc. RTC's are not reportable and as the accident was not in connection with work I would not report. I don't think it would be a RIDDOR reportable as it is a road traffic accident, why would you include it for accident stats? I suppose ypu should keep a record for future use.

Agree with the above posts. RTCs are for the time being not classed as RIDDOR events. Depending on your reporting systems, make a note of the RTC as part of your holistic company reporting structure.

Out of curiosity was the injured employee in a vehicle or were they walking. I have to be honest what I was thinking about ( not necessarily your situation). But would it still be a RTC if the person injured was a pedestrian (say a post person) and was hit by a van? Taking out of the equation for a moment if your employee was or was not at work (ie the post person scenario). I'm aware of the issue of not reportable unless it is the load of the vehicle or loading / unloading etc, but not sure about the above. What do others think? Chris

Good Morning, Thank you all for your responses and comments. Our employee was on his motorbike when the accident occurred. I have kept a log and am documenting information for our records. My primary concern is that he is ok and will be discussing with him about any rehabilitation/support he requires in order to facilitate a return to work for him when is he able to do so. Have a great Friday everyone.
