See http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg232.pdf Depends on the sort of reps ie Union Reps under the 1977 regulations or other reps under the 1996 regs.

they don't have a job, just srsc regs 1977 or the 96 as stated. What do you want them to do?

Agreed. All is required assuming they are bonified TU Reps is a letter of appointment from their Trade Union, which should also identify whether they cover health and safety or industrial relations.

Point to note: 'safety reps' or 'representatives of safety' under current UK regulations do not have duties imposed upon them (meaning they cannot be held responsible) the have 'functions'. I guess this does not stop organisations creating job description if they so wish to do so. However, this may cause confusion between HR and H&S laws. My advise here is to stick with the function of the reps as per the regulations and do-not create a job description or alternatively create a safety job for the person in which you can then give then responsibilities in the job description but dont call them safety rep's. I hope this makes sense.

Helen Just a quick one I am a trade union safety rep. Trade Union reps are appointed by the union (good practice to be elected by the workforce but not a requirement under the regs.) Representatives of Employee safety need to be ELECTED ! by the workforce to be covered by the regs. After all both roles allow you to consult with enforcing authority inspectors which could be a conflict of interests with management. If you are going to appoint your own workplace safety reps thats all well and good but they will not come under the scope of the 1977 or 96 regs
