Can someone explain the difference between 'management systems format' and 'compliance format', in terms of Auditing
thanks

Suspect the difference you are referring to is the scope of the two audits: - a "management systems audit" is likely to be looking at examining how the organisation meets a particular management systems standard. e.g. what are your arrangements for "x", how do you meet the requirements of clause "y" etc. In the case of H&S this may be OHSAS 18001 for example. - a "compliance audit" will be more likely be less focused on the management systems side of things but more focused on key legal compliance areas as per legislation etc.

I think of this rather differently. A management systems audit will be auditing the in-house management system against an external standard such as OHSAS 18000, to check for gaps against a regulatory or legislative framework. SA compliance audit will be checking whether people on-site are doing what they ought to be doing; if the policy says 'Lone working risks will be assessed' a compliance audit would look for such assessments where appropriate.
A system such as RoSPA's QSA does both of these.
That's how I've always thought about it,
John

thank for replies.....JWK, in summary, a 'Management System Audit' would ask 'is there a procedure in place for Emergency Response', and a Complaince Audit would ask for examples???

PS; your compliance audit would also ask whether the actions detailed in, say an emergency plan, are being carried out as required,
