Hi all

After a little bit of advice, we are having to carry out hot works in a confined space, but there is no other means of been able to do the works, the part cannot be removed for welding or hotworks to be carried out.

Am i right in saying that providing a SSOW of work is introdcuced and followed, such as a permit to work, rescue plan, ventalation, fume extraction and equipment such as air feed hoods and a two way radio supply, and fire watch been in place then the works can go ahead.

Thanks any contrubtion within in reason will help.

Hi,
Please add to your list,
Gas monitors,Rescue team, Rescue Equipment, has a rescue scenario from within the confined space been carried out?
hopefully others will be along to add to the list.

If it is arc welding, and the surroundings are steel or other metal, or are damp, you need to address the increased risk of electrocution that results.

See the relevant HSE pages, e.g.

Get the team who are going to do the work around a table for risk assessment. Nothing like having the folks doing the welding advise on how best to do it!

There are a couple of key things to cover:

Confined Space - previous use, possible residue(s) which could be harmful or flammable, ventilation before use, gas monitor to ensure O2 sufficient
Confined Space - ventilation of weld fume / heat during work.
Confined Space - rescue provision.

Hot Works - fire watch & appropriate extinguishers available with people trained in their use.

Supervision of all of the measures you agree are required.

The SSOW or PTW should simply be the written record of the control measures you identify during the risk assessment.

also get an understanding of what materials are present that could get super-heated during the process e.g. chrome so as they can be accounted for
