On the equipment we supply we usually lag our (large) exhaust systems because of the high surface temperatures. We have been questioned if we can install exhaust without lagging Is it permissable to do this by restricting access to the area (on a roof) and signage or is there some absolute ruling on this? I have looked at the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 Extreme temperatures Steps must be taken to eliminate any risk of injury arising from contact with or proximity to machinery parts or materials at high or very low temperatures, and I'm still not clear!

My first question would be to ascertain whether removing the lagging might have any effect on the system itself.
As far as protection is concerned could you fence the system off so that direct contact with the hot surfaces is not possible. I have seen this done with boat exhausts where the pipework has been surrounded by a larger diameter, perforated pipe.

Thanks Chris. I have checked with our technical people and not lagging the exhaust will have no effect on the system We plan to restrict (lock off) access to the roof area where the exhaust will be and sign the exhaust (hot surfaces) Our service engineers will be the only ones allowed up there. I just need to know if this would be sufficient!

Two issues here I think
Burn risk to people, by contact - as discussed. There is a British Standard (number forgotten) on the acceptable surface temperatures before a person might suffer a burn (its related to contact time).
Second. If the exhaust is unlagged, what about the general fire risk, where the equipment will be installed? What happens if something combustible falls against/comes into contact with the hot exhaust? Will a fire result?
