Hi All,
I've just had discussion on site about Push Along MEWPs.
While its generally agreed that an IPAF Licence is required before being allowed to used a standard powered MEWP but where do we stand on smaller non-powered ones ???
A quick search shoes that various training companies will take £100 off you for a half day course and I've found an american ANSI document on the IPAF website stating that formal training (including classroom and practical) is recommended. Aside from that I've not found much of any use.
I appreciate that training in the use of plant and equipment is required under PUWER.
Just wondered how others in the construction industry had dealt with this.
Thanks
Andu

Hi All,
I have just been researching this having had a site where they are using these and just provide the supplier familarization training as proof of compentcy. Whilst I agree the risk of not being able to drive this is non exitent however the mechanical action of up and down and the risk of working at height. Agreed the PUWER requires the information, instruction and training.
I have asked for all operatives to have IPAF to operate on my site.
Any thoughts??
Regards
Rob

IPAF, PAV course is the one to go for. Most risks are the same, overhead obstructions, stability, ground conditions, etc Don't forget that a lot of these smaller non powered mewps are only suitable for indoor use, as they have no design for wind loadings.
My point is just because it has no drive function it still has the potential for harm without appropriate training.
