Dear IOSH Members,

Does anyone have any experience in the above type of project?

I'm meeting the engineers next week and I'd like to be able to ask the most relevant questions.

Any advice or help here is much appreciated.

No experience but I would assume that the engineers have considered structural stability. Things you might ask them are;
Access and egress plans,
emergency planning,
Traffic plans,
Type of plant,
Stage development & plans for same,
Vehicular/pedestrian seperation,
Site security and continued access to the building for workers,
the usual contractor information stuff.

I am sure others here involved in construction will be much more help. Best of luck.

As it is Friday - I was listening to Radio 2 while reading this and they were playing a Madonna song with the words including "when it all falls, when it all falls down".

You have been warned.

Yes... Some experience (not much, but some...). If you don't - then I strongly recommend you do some background reading on the recent jailing of a h&s consultant.. The project he got caught out by was a basement dig undermining an existing building. This type of work is dangerous and difficult to get right. If you don't have the experience to ask the right questions you may wish to avoid getting involved... I have some experience but would still pass on this type of project!.

There is a very long list of questions to include;

*Who is ensuring compliance to RR[FS]O during and after the build
*Is the exhaust ventilation system capable and compliant during and after the build
*Security of the surrounding structures during and after the build [as already noted]
*Unexploded bombs [from WW2] in the ground
*Known hazardous chemicals in the ground
*Emergency procedures for the foreseeable and usual areas
*Who is managing the project for the in-house systems & people ditto for the subbies [get a copy of the H&S management system if U can - of those I have seen 90% are poor to say the least]
*How is 'working at height' being managed during and after the build
*How is 'welfare' being managed during and after the build

Etc. etc. as the list goes on

Best of luck

Temporary works would be a major concern, especially the competencies of those designing, design checking, constructing and managing on site.

Thanks all for the input.

There is a CDM Coordinator (PSDP), team of engineers, experienced contractor (All with their own safety advisers/personnel) on the project and I now have a comprehensive list of questions to ask. I would like to point out that my role is not going to be making decisions or calling shots in relation to risk assessment or controls, I'm more of a file management /desk jockey
