Hi,
Is there a set distance that skips containing general waste and plastic should be kept away from a building? We have one of each both are large skips with a big flip up lid on the front both are lockable and are kept locked overnight. We are looking at having our yard re marked I have heard and seen various distances 10m, 8m "good practice says 6m". Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Grant Nicholson

Have a chat with your insurers, they will give you your definitive answer.

We have to keep all waste and pallets 10m distance from the building.

Geoff beat me to it.

I'd expect safety advice to be based upon fire risk assessment but insurers normally have clear guidance depending upon building use, risk of arson, building type (ie timber frame), specific skip type etc etc.

Our FRA who called Friday to do it told me 6m

remember fire is but one of many areas to consider so do not get too side tracked

assess just what waste is present e.g. it could be polluting waste water held in the skip that is not flammable but can cause a problem if it gets into your works etc. etc. and evaluate what guidance is around plus take note of the advice given here and go from there - if it is as U say then I would go for what your space allows U to have e.g. 6 m if that is possible remembering that we do not want to increase manual handling problems by carrying loads too far noting that everything in H&S is a balance

As Geoff says, speak to your insurer.

Your FRA can show one thing, e.g. 6 metre minimum and away from doors and windows etc.

However, if your policy has a warranty stating waste to be 10m from building line, that is what you need to follow unless you can come to an alternative agreement.

Arson of skips and bins is a common problem and first thing the claims investigator does is measure distance of smoking skip remains to building line to ensure policy warranty is complied with.

Oh and don't forget, your skip may be 10 metres away but when you go and park a laden curtain sided trailer between the skip and the building, the fire has an additional fuel source to help it make the jump to the building.
