Good afternoon everyone

I am just wondering if anyone can possibly send me a copy of any vulnerable person risk assessments that have been done and what extra controls I need to consider.

I will be having to carry out my first one in the next week so am looking for any advice I can get.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Meady

What constitutes 'vulnerable' in this case, without breaking confidences, obviously? Just wondering why you feel you need to do a risk assessment on/with them - what activity are they undertaking (if any) and can the additional controls not be included in any existing risk assessments?

Just a thought.........

Hi meady,

This is a big ask! what is the vulnerability? although the concept is similar to H&S risk assessment the hazards and the controls are a world apart and likely to be things that would never cross your mind if you don't work with vulnerable people regularly.

If I'm honest, the only issue for me is that the person has a condition which would make them evacuate the building more slowly than other employees.

Also, I am unsure whether there should be toilet facilities on the same floor as where said person will be based as I believe they will be situated upstairs, where there are no toilets.

They will be office based and I do not really see any additional hazards apart from the evacuation issue.

Thanks

What would cause them to evacuate slower?

So is it a risk a vulnerable risk assessment or a PEEP that is required...?!?

That was going to be my question too..... if evacuation is the concern, its PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) that is needed.

There are many templates that can be found on the net that you can adapt to suit.

It does suond like a PEEP. You also need to consider the fire and evacuation process, fire marshal training, whether lifts are disabled when the fire larm is activated, MOE, etc. For vulnerable persons they will each have their own particular needs in the event of an evacuation.

The more details you provide the better the answers.

Sounds to me like you need to do a risk assessment under the Equality Act. Unfortunately, these are very specific to the person and you will need to research their problems and their needs in abstract and then sit down and have a full meeting and discussion with the person to see what modifications need to be carried to make their work life easier including provision of toilets, emergency evacuation and all manner of other issues.

There is no standard template for this, it's all donkey work and research so you understand the issues before you talk to them. Apart from anything else, doing the research is the polite thing to do so you can empathise with the employee and see the situation from their perspective. Makes them open up more and gives you a better understanding.

PEEP or if they have a significant medical condition use Occ Health. Dont do a meidcally based risk assessment unless you are qualified.

Hi thanks everyone again

I will definitely do a PEEP.

I'm probably worrying too much about the situation, but as I haven't yet met the person i'm afraid my imagination might have run away with itself which explains my concerns....

Thanks for all of the input and help :)

as far as I am aware there is no specific requirement in the Equality Act itself to risk assess. However there is a requirement via other laws as H probably means and as noted the word 'vulnerable' covers a mighty wide areas so u need to narrow down things and provide detail so as advice can be targeted
