Hi all, Planning on getting my director onto a training course to highlight is responsibilities and duties. Searching internet these two course keep popping up. Does anyone know the difference between the two or is the contents the same, just different titles, if there is a difference which course would you recommend? Cheers

Why pay for someone to come in, your insurance company can provide some updates of claims etc and do a session for your directors, just ask , we did and they came in for free. We were able to relate this to our statisaitcs and recent RIDDORS etc. It had more meaning and kept it local and fresh.

My problem is our activities are predominantly on major construction sites, where all principle contractors are following the guidelines set by United Kingdom Construction Group (UKCG). Where it sets minimum training standards for all parts of the business from directors down to engineers. So yes you could say its just a tick box exercise to stay compliant, but for me personally I want the MD to understand his roles and responsibilities.

Hi Nelly13 In response to your original question, Safety for Senior Executives is aimed at Directors/Executives of companies with more than 250 employees and Directing Safely for less than 250. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards Maxine IOSH Web Team

Nelly - I wouldn't describe it as a tick box exercise. UKCG (and previously Major Contractors Group) Health and Safety Charter requirements have evolved for the very good reason of continual improvement. ....and to add to what Maxine has said. Unless the rules have changed since we dropped our licence for Safety for Senior Execs, Directing Safely is an off the IOSH shelf package that covers the generalities. In contrast Safety for Senior Execs is bespoke to the provider and best bespoke to the delegates, thence best as a package that is relevant to the delegates' own H&S management systems.

Although the choice of course is meant to depend on how many people are employed within the business, the aims and objectives are to get senior managers to think about the strategy of managing h&s and therefore the syllabi(?) are very similar. My understanding is that for both courses the provider currently has to develop their own material against the syllabus and then get approval from IOSH, although IOSH did send around a survey last year asking who would buy an off-the-shelf IOSH Directing Safely. Therefore it's worth asking to see a training plan from the provider to check what they are going to do during the day meets your needs and will be of value.

Why not get them to read the IOD paper "Leading Health and Safety at Work" on subject matter www.iod.com. Jon
