Hi all

Checking a first aid kit contents and I noticed some of the plasters have dates on the packet and some don't. It seemed that the ones sourced from local supermarkets and well known chemist type shops don't have the dates, but others from first aid suppliers do. I know the expiry date is important as they can not be guaranteed as still being sterile. The problem I have is how do I check the ones without dates ?

I have been told that the supermarket ones are much cheaper than first aid suppliers, so they would prefer to keep doing this. The ones from the supermarket are ok, other than I can not tell if they are out of date ( even if it is the week after purchase).

We obviously don't want to use out of date ones, but if there is no date, what then. Anyone else come across this and what did you do ?

A plaster doesn’t have to be sterile, is just a clean protective pad.
A plaster with an expire date is normally due to the adhesive tape or if added antiseptic solution (Domiphen Bromide B.P.) just evaporates.
Any wound should be clean before placing a plaster on and plasters should only stay on for max one day unless otherwise stated.
If I were you I would replace with cheaper plaster, ensure correct instructions on use in place and check the plasters regularly to ensure the heat hasn’t destroyed the adhesive glue.

Thanks Thomo for taking the time to reply.

Heat where I work is not a problem :0)

It was just cheaper and also easier to just get some petty cash and go buy some from Tesco / Boots etc ( other shops also sell them) rather than faff about with all the rigmarole we have to go to buy off the Internet or min qty etc.

I may go hunting to see if any local shops do some with a date (or date on box and they stay in box with no mixing).

Cheers
Chris
