We are planning on doing some work to assess the safety culture in the organisation. I have seen the Safety Climate Tool from HSL (Are the questions available anywhere?) but we don't have a budget for this and are hoping to put something together ourselves. Could any of you recommend a tool or questions that you have used in the past or do you have a tool/questionnaire of you own that you would be willing to share? Any help would be appreciated.

GB1977 The difference between surveying the 'culture' (or 'climate') or an organisation and other kinds of surveys is the extent to which bias emerges unless you understand in some depth the implications of questions you omit as well as those you use. The safest tool is to use is a repertory grid, which permit you to adapt it readily according the differences in levels and in risk exposures. Once you understand the implications of how to design them, you can use them reliably indefinitely. 'The Easy User Guide to Repertory Grids', by A D Jancowicz, John Wiely 2003 explains how to go about them. Alternatively, you may learn enough on a one day course led by a chartered psychologist and chartered safety/health practitionerrl; there are a few available in London during the coming months
