My Wife takes our daughter swimming every week and last week she left her cossie in the changing room. Due to the distance my wife thought she would pick it up today but was told thet could only hold lost property for 25hrs due to health and safety.
Does anyone know of such a reg?

Mabe they are using H&S as a cover to save the embarrassment of telling your wife what they really think of people who make their daily working life harder.

No applicable regulation for that. The excuse given by the leisure centre staff is typical, i.e. use H&S as a way to justify doing what they want. If you fancy making a point , ask to see the centre's H&S statement/policy on this matter. I suggest they don't have one at all. Good to hear that your daughter is keen on swimming, get her a new cossie and get her back in the water.

Strictly speaking by disposing of it without giving a change to get back it is theft (strictly speaking conversion) and you could sue for the cost of the cossie. A forgotten cossie is a forgotten cossie- innocent in itself. I can understand they may not want to keep it for too long but its no excuseto use the old health and safety card. If this was the case I think every school in the country would be inn trouble with rgard to lost property

I'd ask to see their risk assessment that stipulates that lost property is a hazard to health if kept for more than the stated period. They won't have one, of course. I would then say to them that: "You won't mind if I cross check on this with the local Health and Safety Executive office, will you?" Watch the reaction!

Personally I prefer the swimming baths folks to concentrate on keeping people safe.
Someone (an adult it would appear) left their personal possessions behind and suddenly its the responsibility of someone else and judging by some responses a hanging offence they have not acted as some sort of servant for the punters.
If the cossie was so important the owner should have returned straight away it was found missing not at their convenience.

I could make a case for wet fabric being a health hazard after 24 hours.

Absolute nonsense! I presume they have disposed of the said swimming costume, in which case a complaint would be justified in my opinion. Ok, people need to accept some personal responsibility, but hands up all those who have never lost something.
What if someone left their reading glasses, mobile phone, etc, would they dispose of these after 25 hours? It certainly has nothing to do with 'elf and safety. I can understand a limit on holding on to lost property...but 25 hours!
