Some advice required on warehouse racking.... We have some unused racking that we need to be installed for storage purposes. Does the person doing this need to have a recognised qualification on order to be competant? Could we have our experienced engineers do this and have it inspected by a SEMA type company prior to it being used? I really am not sure about the regulations regarding racking and its correct installation. Thanks in advance.

Hi It is recommended that racking is installed by a competent SEMA approved person under SIERS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme). However this is just recommended, if the end user is to install the racking then installation work must be carried out in accordance with the Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association (SEMA) 'Guide to Method Statement for the Installation of Storage Equipment.' The racking must be periodically inspected - Visual Inspection by someone in house, and a more detailed inspection on an annual basis by a SEMA approved inspector.

Thankyou Gav81, thats pretty much what i suspected. I think that we will have an external contractor install the racking.

Hi You might want to download HSG76 from the HSE website. SEMA are an industrial standards body, therefore the HSE give guidance that of their rules are followed, then you will be OK. The period of inspection of your racking should be decided by a risk assessment. Basically it is based on risk. In terms of installation - you should have a competent person(s) do this. This competency must include putting load plates and safety information on the end of the racking. So unless your in-house poeple can do this, use a SEIRS installer. I can recommend an organization if you PM me. Ian

Hi If you go to the link below and click on the box on the right-hand side 'SEMA User Code' then SEMA will send you a free copy of the SEMA Code of Practice for the Use of Static Pallet Racking. http://www.sema.org.uk/page.asp?node=27 Hope this helps

Apologies if this is a derail but if anyone can recommend a good course for racking inspectors I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Hi FVH SEMA do two courses that you may find useful. 1 is the racking damages inspection the other is the maintenance course. Check out their website for details. There is another course ran by an independent company, but I have not attended it yet, so could not say if it is any good. Ian
