I work for a small welding/fabrication company and I'm current trying to establish a suitable health and safety training course for our newly appointed Operations Foreman. He is directly responsible for a small team of 4 and has never undertaken any formal health and safety training before. We are looking for a course that will utimately enable him to make decision to manage his workforce safely by undertaking on site risk assessments, preparing safe systems of work/methods statements and to assist myself and the managing director in our roles to manage health and safety. I'm currently looking at NEBOSH Award in Health and Safety, IOSH Managing Safely or IOSH Supervising Safely but as I've never had any dealings with these courses before I was looking for some feedback from those who have either personally done or arranged these for others in their workplace. Many thanks in advance.

Given what you are asking the foreman to achieve I would consider the NEBOSH Certificate as a great starting point as it covers a vast array of topics and can be quite in depth. I had to do the Managing Safely a couple of years ago and though I am Chartered I went on the course, but found it of little value SBH

We currently have a H&S Training programme for all staff and the level of course is determined by the level of responsibility staff have. Our Senior staff do the IOSH Safety for Senior Executives, Team Leaders and those responsible for higher risk activities complete the IOSH Managing Safely (MS) and all other staff complete the IOSH Working Safely. Staff who have completed the MS are responsible for the day to day activities in their department and complete their departmental risk assessments with input from myself when required. We find this works well and gives all staff some ownership over managing safety within their areas of work. We do have some other staff who have a bit more responsibility for H&S and they have completed the NEBOSH NGC. Feel free to pm me if you want further info - oh and we deliver the IOSH courses in-house
