I work at a large industrial site where asbestos is present and is well managed as per the Asbestos Regs. We have a new contractor mobilising to site soon who, when I asked them whether their personnel have been asbestos awareness trained, their answer was that they have all attended the CCNSG Safety Passport course and have therefore fullfilled the requirements.
I do not agree but I cannot find anywhere anything to go back to them with to demonstrate that the CCNSG Safety Passport does not fullfill the requirements.
Any help would be appreciated.

The CCNSG Safety Passport does include a section on Asbestos, but I don't think it goes into the depth required for asbestos awarness training. I suppose the only way to find out would be to speak to CCNSG to find out what the section covers:
According to the HSE website the training should cover:
- the properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of developing lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
- the types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos materials in buildings and plant
- the general procedures to deal with an emergency, eg an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace
- how to avoid the risk of exposure to asbestos

My site also requires CCNSG and, in my opinion, it's good for getting the basics coverd off, including Asbestos. To be honest, what is almost certainly missing is an overview of how you and your site manages asbestos. To quote directly from the CCNSG website; "The aim of the CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme is to ensure a basic knowledge of health and safety for all site personnel to enable them, after appropriate site induction, to work on site more safely with lower risk to themselves and others" More here (I have no afiliation or association with CCNSG by the way); http://www.ccnsg.com/Jim

You could ask CCNG directly whether they consider the content of their 2-day course meets the requirements of Reg10 CAR and ACoP.
As the whole syllabus includes more than 20 topics, it seems to me unlikely this will enable a match CAR requirements.

asbestos awareness should be carried out as a yearly refresher so I would point that out to them unless they have all sat the safety passport within the last year
i dont know enough about the safety passport but I imagine its similar to cscs and wouldnt go into asbestos in the depth that could be classified as asbestos awareness which is usually a 2-3 hour presentation
