A question for anyone working in a quarry type environment: Is the standard industrial safety helmet (EN 397:2012) adequate for use in this environment?

Try this document - I haven't read it in detail http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...2009/03/om200903app1.pdf I guess failing finding any other standard, then you are left just with this standard. Try searching the BSi web page/search option.

That's what I used in my old job, along with whatever accessories were needed (similarly to on a construction site). This applied to machine operatives, crushing and coating plant operatives, etc.

I have looked at this HSE page but it also mentions EN 12492:2012 Mountaineering helmets and our issue is our fieldworkers( might be inspectors, might be wildlife researchers) visiting a quarry. Would the quarry operators most likely insist on us wearing a standard industrial helmet?

Quite straightforward answer.......yes - the standard industrial safety helmet is what is worn by quarry operatives as prescribed by all the major firms in the industry

I worked in quarrying industry for 11 years and our employees all wore standard EN 397 safety helmets.

Concur with what the others say - standard EN:397 safety helmet to be worn at all times. Your fieldworkers may be able to make a case for the mountaineering helmets if and only if, they are climbing on the quarry faces. Mountaineering helmets are more secure and afford better vision in that situation. For all other activities within the bowl of the quarry or on haul roads etc then standard safety helmet. Biggest issue in a quarry is ejection of materials from machinery and vehicles. Reminds me of a quarry client I had a while back who issued all the staff with baseball type bump caps. Complete waste of time and we made him replace them all.

Biggest issue that a helmet can help to mitigate I should have added. Vehicle movements, heavy machinery, WBV and RCS are also major issues in the industry.

Yes thanks forb this; my thoughts essentially- standard helmet for general use and a mountaineering helmet only the are going to climb a rockface etc Cheers
