Risk Assessment for Nursing Mothers Working within Chemistry

We have a newly returned mother who is breastfeeding her child. Her job is working in chemistry labs working with a whole range of chemicals producing novel products. She has had plenty of time to think of ways to 'pick holes' in the risk assessment (she doesn't want to go back into the labs for as long as possible and the company does want her to be productive - in the labs - now she's returned). Does anyone have an example of a robust risk assessment or advice?

Neil, this sounds like a job for an Occupational Hygienist with specialist knowledge in this area, along with your in-house chemists who should know the properties of the substances present and being created.

If your existing COSHH assessments have "holes" relating to nursing mothers it is feasible that other exposures are not adequately assessed or controlled. Your returned employee should be an integral part of the assessment team as she knows what the job entails, the way it is really carried out (ie not always what the procedures say) and has concerns over the her health and that of her child.
