Hi

Before I started here H&S notice boards were supplied at each location (office based locations) but nobody ever told anyone what to put on them. Do any of you have a list of things that you display on your notice boards above and beyond the usual policy statement etc?

Thanks

The thing about notice boards is that they must be kept fresh. They need to be renewed at least once a month ideally once a week. Three are few things more depressing that a notice board telling people of a course that was run 6 months ago!
Apart from the HSE poster and a copy of the policy statement you can include:
• Information on your training initiatives, what course are being run that month
• A graph or chart showing some basic stats eg. How days since a time lost accident, there has to be some positive messages of encouragement-the notice board should. on the whole, be upbeat
• A theme for that month, WAH, COSHH or PPE-pictures, posters etc for that
• Announcement of meetings; open forum rather than the minutes of the last H&S committee
• Recruitment drives for safety reps, first aiders, H&S champions
Avoid being too wordy- you are lucky if someone will spend 20 seconds looking at the notice board so avoid just sticking reports up.
Use pictures with lots of colour to attract people’s attention, for at least those 20 seconds.
You target is not just the staff but the management who often like H&S to have a level of visibility in the organisation: it makes them feel better
Keeping a good notice board is quite a job and it might not be the best way to keep in touch with you staff, so before you embark on it make sure you can do right. If you don’t have the resources to do it you will find that the board soon looks tired and boring. Someone will notice that and the message will come out that “H&S don’t care”. Of course you do care but it is difficult to prioritise the notice board when you busy doing other urgent stuff.

Just some suggestions:
Employers Liability Insurance; Names of and locations of First Aiders; Location of first aid boxes; Name(s) and locations of fire marshal(s); Name(s) and locations of the regional Health and Safety Representative(s); Fire Plan and floor plan; Emergency/Bomb Evacuation Procedures; Day and time of weekly fire alarm test; Contact details for the Health and Safety Team

Thanks both for the suggestions.

It is a really good point about keeping it up to date. My problem is that our locations (each which has a board) are located nationally across England, Scotland and Wales so I am reliant on others to update.

There is some information which does not change week to week or month to month and some that will. I found that if I put a coloured stripe across the top of the sheet people noticed the colour change and would know the information had been updated. This was noticeable at a distance.

May not work for everyone, but seemed to work for me.

I saw a company some years ago that had put a plasma screen - about 17" - in the centre of their noticeboards. They kept it on a loop but regularly changed information. Policy, Employer Liability insurance certificate etc were around the side.

It might not be practical in your case but it certainly got attention.

Cheers.

I used some red arrows (no not those that fly!) with words like "you probably haven't read this--yet!" and " I bet you didn't know this" written across them and pointing to the area that I wanted people to focus on.

Seemed to work well judging by some of the alternative arrows that were sometimes posted between my visits :-)
