Hi - quick question. I have always labelled ACM areas in buildings. I am being challenged that a register and drawing is sufficient to notify employees. What is everyone else doing now?

Always label an ACM as asbestos, if it breaks people in the nearby area need to know it is asbestos so that it can be reported and dealt with appropriately.

We tend to label ACM in areas where the public have no access (eg plant rooms etc). In public areas we rely on our management systems. We have found that in public areas and areas where there is a high degree of people traffic labels tend to get taken off and placed elsewhere, get painted over or otherwise removed and defaced. We have found that relying entirely on labels for warning contractors and maintenance staff is open to error and does not replace a robust management process.

In an ideal world you would always label, however this is not always practical in front of house public facing areas such as restaurants or shops, as warning labels may put customers off.
If you choose not to label, ensure the register & drawings are available at all times (including for emergency works), and make sure your contractors review the information before carrying out any works.

Excellent, thought as much. I have always labelled. Our survey's all state to label areas where there is ACM's present for the reasons is what if it does get accidentally disturbed, people need to know immediately.. thank you!

Not a good idea in schools and public buildings.

always labelled in private places and as Ron said - labelling not good in schools and similar where the public is present as things can get completely out of hand
staff must be talked to e.g. carry out an asbestos tool box talk as well as having the labels etc. in place

Just setting off to visit a very large public school that had a register and management plan in place. Staff were trained in asbestos awareness.
Maintenance team working in boiler plant room disturbed encapsualed asbestos that had not been labelled. Management system failed and staff exposed to fibres as a result.
Label it up if non public area.
