I'm currently looking into the health and safety risks with regard to biomass fuel systems. Carbon monoxide seems to be a concern, but I have been told the dust (potash) is a carcinogen (I have done some research and cant find a reference to this) We will be taking on jobs in domestic and commercial premises and I am gathering info for our RAMS, any input would be very much appreciated.

I think that people will need more information than just “biomass fuel systems” which covers a range of pieces of kit. Dust is always an issue but again need more information.

Confined Space working is a likely issue too.

I agree with Ron, it is an employer’s responsibility. If your company makes them go to their GP I am sure the GP has a duty to act/report it as an occupational injury. Not sure of the exact mechanism but I suspect your company will get a formal letter from them. Long time since I looked at this but the Occ health provider will liaise with the GP regarding treatment/records.

I've had more info about the work we need to carry out. We will be servicing domestic wood pellet boilers, the amount of pellets being 300kg maximum, stored in 10kg bags. It looks like we want to move into servicing commercial heating systems as well, where pellets will be stored in larger quantities in designated rooms.

Send me a private message & I'll email you some guidance & risk assessments I put together with colleagues in the mechanical engineering team in 2014 - it is for small commercial installations rather than domestic boilers though.

Hi Colossians, I have a domestic biomass boiler burning wood pellets; don't know where the 300Kg you talk about comes from as we buy pellets in '1 tonne' (actually usually 980Kg) pallets, supplied as 98 10Kg bags. The HSE stuff is about bulk storage in poorly ventilated spaces, pellets in 10Kg bags stored in e.g. a garage or shed, which are not airtight, pose effectively zero risk of CO build-up, John

I'm confused here wouldn't the problem be a build up of Carbon Dioxide from the wood pellets rather than Carbon monoxide.

The HSE are not confused (above link) Neither are the references at the bottom of the page in the link.
