Hi all
Basically a short question that I will hopefully be able to get some answers to regarding MEWPs.
What is the maximum distance as to which you can lean out to carry out work from the platform? I have looked over all the relevant legislation and guidance notes and cannot find anything stating the requirement apart from if there is a risk of overreaching then a fall restraint lanyard should be used. The question to this is how far is overreaching?? I cannot find anything stipulating a distance or something as simple as keep your belt buckle within the basket.
Can anyone help me out on this please? Or point me to the relevant guidance hopefully looking for something official in black and white.

Fletch, I've always said to operators: wear harness and only reach out keeping both feet on the platform, never 'climb' on the frame.

Thanks John
Yes that's how we have been dealing with it, however questions have been asked by operators to managers to see if this is correct then confusing them so I have been called into the meetings.
The task which we are carrying out which has raised the issue is repair LGV soft top roof sheets.

Surely the distance that they can reach out from the basket is dependent on the height of the operator, or even their centre of gravity?

As far as you can reach without leaving the platform (platform not handrails, yes i'm looking at you Mr contractror) and the lanyard will allow is a good rule of thumb

I believe the biggest risk is reaching THROUGH the handrails. There's more chance of falling through them than over the main guard rail due to the position of the anchor point.
