Hi Everyone, Are there any formal requirements for the training and competency of welders and welding inspectors, if so what are they? Kind regards, James

It depends what they are going to weld. If they are welding something safety critical such as pressure vessels, then yes and yes. Clearly all welders need to develop competencies, otherwise their work will fall apart and they will damage their health. Colleges often run courses suitable for welders.

Speaking from a welders viewpoint, even relatively minor welding needs a reasonable degree of competency. In work such as constructional welding [steel-framed-buildings] there is usually a contractual requirement for the welder/s to have been tested as to the quality of both training and welding. And for that testing to be repeated at intervals and/or if the material or welding requirements change. Most employers chose to code/test to minimal requirements.....it's cheaper, and stops the guys walking into better paid jobs when they get their documents! (and yes, the test certs are given to the welders)

As Jane said it depends on what they will be welding. For instance for weld inspection you have NDT ( non destructive testing) which could be visual inspection, MPI (magnetic particle inspection) or UT (ultra sonic Testing). If you were making a structural product then you may use all three, however if making a hanging basket it is likely to only be visual ( unless it is a very big structural hanging basket). For welding something structural you would need to be coded for the type of weld and process you will be using. So for anyone to help you we would need more information. Chris
