Hi all
I wondered if there was anyone out there who could assist me ?
We are looking at setting up an office in SA and wondered if anyone had experience of SA H&S and if so how it/does it differ from UK regs.

All help appreciated

Regards

Hi Mel

Take a look at Sections 8, 9 and 10 of the following

amended on 6/25/2003 by Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 General Amendment, 2003 (Notice 928 of 2003)

as amended on 6/25/2003 by Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 General Amendment, 2003 (Notice 930 of 2003)

Freely available at:

I looked after 6 sites in SA for a few years and we moved a number of ex-pat Managers into plant positions and to comply with the safety development policy I had set (Every plant Manager in his/her development would either have spent time in a safety role or completed NeBOSH certificate) I put them through the SAMTRAC course which helped...

Enjoy it is a great place...

Thanks Both
I would only be visiting once or twice a year, we would probably not look at training anyone up over there as it would only be a small office of around 10 or so people for the time being. We can if ok with the SA law apply our policies and procedures from the UK to the SA office as I understand we have a more robust system in place within UK H&S law.
Obviously I need to be aware of any differences within the 2 sets of law so thanks BLEVE for the link.

Hi Mel, if you want you may use ILO Legosh legislation database which offers you a good general law point of view, you'll be able to do comparate law with uk in several topics.

http://www.ilo.org/dyn/l..._CODE3,P1100_YEAR:ZA,:NO

Please take a look at it, it's really helpful.

Best regards.

What industry will you be working in?

I live in RSA so I can help with laws here but I cant compare to laws in the UK as I have no experience with it. Maybe we can help each other on that front as I'm looking to do the reverse for my own benifit.

I have a National Diploma in Safety Management from University of South Africa (foundation degree equivalent in the UK) with around 8 years experience in South Africa.

I also have a Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from Loughborough University with ten years experience in the UK.

I would say I am well placed to advise on the approach you should take.

Message me if you need any assistance.
