I am trying to improve our communication with employees system in particular the way we consult them regarding changes. So the question is: how do you effectively consult employees on changes? Do you: - do it formally in writing - have formal or informal meetings - put a note on notice boards We have a workforce with serious literacy issues & I am conscious that our current systems are failing to achieve effective communication. Suggestions & examples more than welcome Thank you Bernie

Hi Bernie I agree that good communication is essential especially when trying to communicate changes; a lot of people don't like changes. I ran a safety culture survey a few years for all our staff and one of the issues identified was the lack of communication when it came to health and safety issues. Putting notices up etc throughout your work place is not the answer. Consultation and employee engagement is. You need a good infrastructure to do this for example:- do you have trained safety representatives, if so are they approachable. Do issues brought to the attention of your safety representatives get added, if applicable to your health and safety committee meetings agenda. Do you communicate out to your staff the mins of those meetings and any action plans the committee may formulate. It is also a good idea to compile a communication and culture procedure. Bottom line I feel is good employee engagement; its one of the best ways of getting your workforce to "buy in" to a good pro-active safety culture within your organization
Good luck.

Bern, as Steve has said it must be employee engagement, so you need to be asking for feedback from any information or proposals for change.
If your workforce has serious literacy issues then their feedback will be mostly verbal and so must be written down by your safety or supervisory staff to keep the record.
