Is it sufficient to make the appointment of Principal Designer or Principal Contractor via email and receive a confirmation by email, or should all communication be via signed letter?

Good question. It is okay in my opinion to send initial notification by email with or without a read receipt. However I think appointments should be sent via a registered letter with a note to acknowledge the appointment.

Surely external appointments are made by Contract? Do we really need to add more bureaucracy to that? In-house, it is common practice for appointment to be made by default compliance with internal operational arrangements, service level agreement, etc.

Ron Fair point. What about post contract for say term contractors. You will need to appoint these retrospectively for either PC, PD or both.
