Quick question.....Under PUWER Assessments, doesn't forklifts and other MEWP come under these regs? If so, I have a separate PUWER Assessment for Machinery i.e. Saw Lines etc...but would a general Risk Assessment be enough for a Forklift?

I admit I'm curious as to what distinction you place between a "PUWER" assessment and a task/activity based assessment using that equipment. PUWER Reg 4 requires: All work equipment must be assessed at procurement stages for: fitness for the conditions in which it is used and determining if your choice of work equipment increases risk to employees’ health and safety. Thereafter, PUWER requires the employer to take appropriate steps to ensure the equipment is used only in the conditions it is suited for. Whole-task assessment should encompass installation, use, maintenance, servicing, emergencies.

We do do PUWER compliance assessments to make sure that we're happy with equipment internally since its quite common to find inadequate guarding etc on some pieces of kit. We then use a risk assessment process to identify the level of risk that these deficiencies pose to the users etc.

this is how I done it in my previous place....although, would a PUWER Assessment be required annually for machinery....or only when a sucificant change has taken place with the machinery or layout of site.....and lastly....would a RA for Forklifts and MEWP be enough, instead of having a PUWER Assessment for the forklifts too
