I am currently having a discussion with a contractor and they are quoting some specific 'Government requirement' from the following document to me.... "Draft guide to fire precautions in existing residential care premises", I am finding it hard to find this document other than a reference to a 1983 publication(!?) Does the document exist, is it current, has it been superseded was it ever anything more than a draft? I would welcome some assistance from those in the know regarding the background history to the document. Hoping the forum comes up trumps. Thanks in advance.

As far as I am aware, the most recent official guidance for England is the , "Fire safety risk assessment: residential care premises" based on the current Fire Safety Legislation which is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

https://www.gov.uk/gover...sra-residential-care.pdf

My understanding is that the older documents, were from the Home Office which had the responsibility for Fire Safety until it was passed on to where it is today, i.e. Department for Communities and Local Government

My understanding is that it is no longer in use. A link:-

In what context was this contractor referring to this document?

The above document is what the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service use for care homes, its the fire safety bible that they hit you with if you haven't complied with any of the advice given in the document. Note: It is a Scottish government document that has recently been revised.

I do not know of any England/Wales equivalent but I hope that it is helpful, I think the guidance in this document can be widely applied - for example, I use it for HMO's with vulnerable people.

Thanks for the responses. With regard to mssy's query at #4, it is being suggested (by a training provider) that there is a Government requirement given in the document for care home staff to attend a specific fire training course twice per year. We are not talking about fire drills etc, the suggestion being made is more than that. I am wanting to see the aforementioned 'Government requirement' for myself and am of a mind to question the existence/validity of the document being quoted - hence my initial query.

Chas,

I have never heard of such a requirement, I would also be interested in seeing such guidance.
