Hello all,
I was wondering what peoples views on SSIP members are? I have recently heard comment that 'one' was better than 'a.n.other' - I found it odd given that they were both in construction procurement. Surely the SSIP's 14 core requirements for H&S are being met, so what is the difference?

Any experience out there?

Thanks in advance

I would imagine there are any numbers of opinions out there on the effectiveness or otherwise of any SSIP member. The whole purpose of the forum however is to demonstrate equivalence and the HSE has signed up to the principle, see the SSIP website.

As only occasional small scale dabblers into the world of CDM as clients we have taken the equivalence statements at face value and accept any SSIP forum accreditation as sufficient for the first stage of approval. I would imagine however that those in the industry would be taking a much more in depth assessment of this.

Hi

You might want to look at PAS91 to see if the SSIP membership would be OK.

Adale,

I think perhaps your expectations of SSIP are unrealistic. SSIP scheme acceptance demonstrates that the contractor was able to evidence that the foundations for successful health and safety management were available, and to a degree, effective, within his organisation. Such assurance is of use to the prospective client at initial tender (prequalification) stages.

Best practice due diligence by the Client means Contractor performance /competence must be further evaluated at other stages, e.g. second stage response to project- or contract-specific requirements; on-task performance and compliance, post contract review and evaluation.

There is more to the above process than just 'health and safety' of course. In simple terms, the client should be ensuring he's getting what he was promised and what he pays for.
