Dear IOSH Members,
Does anyone have experience of overhead lifting cranes (ideally semi portal gantry cranes)?
I'm interested in your views (good or bad) on either using a wireless controller or a pendant system to operate such equipment.
Do you have any preference (and why) etc?

I've had experience of both. Personally I prefer the remote but there are pros and cons for both.
Pros for Remote generally centre around the fact that persons don't have to stand in and round the load.
Cons are the maintenance that comes with them, the need to charge them, danger of frequency crossover (had a serious incident with that before) and the discipline of persons standing too far away from the lift therefore not paying enough attention to the lift path etc. Remotes take some beating in the general workplace. Not to mention having to look for them if they aren't left in the parking spot
The pendants are the opposite really.
Pros (No frequency crossover/interference), No need to charge, Generally less maintenance.Stand up to more abuse than the remotes.
Cons: Standing near a load, Swing hazards when guys just let them go. Not exactly practical if you have a workplace with different cells as you have to keep passing the pendant over walls etc.
Just my preference but I would put up with the cons on a remote to ensure people have a safe vantage point. Obv either will have to be properly supervised or maintained.
Hope that helps

Also experienced both and same comments as above.
I would also add the pendant cable can get easily damaged and pulled out of control unit ( or other end, so work at height to fix).
Size of crane also may be a factor if very large remote is the best (only) way to go, but internal lower I would be more tempted with Pendant.
Obviously remote if you need to use them in tandem.

Its a pretty low level set-up being proposed (inside a factory)...two tonne lift capacity to aid roll changes on a machine. Max travel approx 15 metres

Oh!!! That changes things significantly. Cheapest option (pendant) would be my preference here if that's the case. If money is no object then take your pick but either one would be fine IMO.
Pendant will cost you a lot less in the long run. What Chris42 said is correct though. There can be issues with cables etc.
