I am looking to see if there is a minimum distance that should be kept between a trench and scaffolding. I can't find any. It seems to me that an assessment should be done and things such as, depth of trench, ground conditions etc should be taken into account.
We have been quoted 'minimum 5 metres', but I can 't find anything to back that up.

Hi Rach108,
There is no standard distance. It depends on a risk assessments, speak to someone competent in scaffold designs and temporary works for excavations.
How deeps is the trench going to be? How is it going to be excavated? How does the weight of the scaffold effect the trench? etc. These are the questions that need to be asked.

an assessment based on ground conditions, weight on scaffold, duration of both scaffolding and excavation, weather conditions and depth of excavation would all be needed. i agree with not ever seeing an actual distance from scaffold.
