Dear All,
Trying to find how many crane rescues have taken place in the last five years. I have searched the internet but just seem to get training companies or stories of individuals being retrieved as they need to attend hospital for medical reasons.

Have you tried the CPA (Construction Plant Hire Association)? There are a couple of Special interest Groups there for cranes. In my experience they Special Interest Groups share incident rates and Investigation etc ...that might help..

Having did the Crane Rescue refresher course last year, I did ask the instructor the same question.
He did say to me the last Crane Rescue was over 10 years ago which was completed by operatives using the rescue kit.
Myself personally have not heard anything different.
For clarification you could contact various companies that conduct these courses.

Morning Gents,
There was a rescue/ recovery enacted on the Olympic village project back in 2011 using full gotcha kit. I was part of the rescue team who responded at the time. I do recall the trainers telling us when we did the training in 2011 that the statistics were close to 1 in a million chance of having to actually use and deploy the kit in anger. The CPA now calculate that figure as well to be 1 per 12.9 x 10(power 6) operating hours.
The CPA have a good technical guidance note (TIN013) on crane rescue including stats over the last 10 years. The event I have mentioned above in 2011 is the sole reported rescue in that period. These stats may only be rescue deploying a kit and there may have also been rescues enacted by other means e.g. basket to cab or during erection of the crane itself from towers.
At the time when these stats were stated and before the rescue I was asked do we even need the kit...? you never do until that 1 in a million time happens.

Gents you will struggle to get the information you require the only actual rescue was around the 20 year mark when an operator broke his leg getting from the cab to the ladder.
There have been 3 others to my knowledge which were illnesses and recovered by fire brigades. rightfully or wrongly they were treated as non reportable as they were illnesses and not accidents. Point is none of them were recorded so stats will be difficult to come by.
It is one of my favourite questions on site visits "where is your rescue plan" a lot have but some feel they can just ring the fire brigade ,which is not classed as a plan. And yes where required I will give every assistance to ensure one is in place.

We had to recover a guy from a Tower Crane two years ago after he suffered a back spasm. We couldnt use the rope recovery kit as the guy refused to get in the harness or stretcher. In the end we used our rescue cage and an adjacent taller tower crane.

You could try checking the HSE prosecution & notice area, looking by regulation, ie LOLER and see what it says.
