Hi all, we have had a little concern regarding kitchen stools put in the mess rooms. We thought this would be suitable and sufficient given that breaks are a maximum of half an hour anyway. The environment looks great, has open windows, lots of light, all mod cons but a concern about using stools rather than chairs??

Concerns over what? Ergonomics? Stability? People falling off? The mess room is not a workstation (unless you expect them to work during their breaks) so do not require chairs with back rests. Chairs in public restaurants are used for aesthetics purposes and it's what customers expect. However, there are many cafes that use bench seating which is acceptable as long as they are stable and in good condition (splinters in the nether regions are a little uncomfortable).

Workplace health, safety and welfare – rest area seating (info below answers the question) ACOP http://www.hse.gov.uk/pUbns/priced/l24.pdf Reg 25: be equipped with – (i) an adequate number of tables and adequate seating with backs GUIDANCE http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg244.pdf Seats should be provided for workers to use during breaks. These should be in a place where personal protective equipment need not be worn. Rest areas or rooms should be large enough and have sufficient seats with backrests and tables for the number of workers likely to use them at any one time, including suitable access and seating which is adequate for the number of disabled people at work. And construction sites welfare: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cis59.pdf The rest facilities should have adequate numbers of tables, seating with backs
