Hi, I work for a SME Manufacturing company and we have pallet racking that was installed in 2012, but has not received an inspection since being installed. They do not have a system in place for visual checks and do not appear to be making any records of any checks at all. In regards to PUWER we should be checking at least every 12 months from what I have been able to find, but nothing definitive on racking specifically. Any help is appreciated and if you are a qualified inspector for racking can you let me know as I may be in need of your services Many thanks

As far as I am aware Pallet racking "should" be inspected at regular intervals and pallets inspected for damage each time they are removed and recorded The HSE I think say that an expert should be asked to inspect these as well, time intervals as and when depending on use, but at least once a year. The problem is these are only guidelines "should be" not a must be. We do whatever we feel is required to ensure that risk is acceptable levels, Doing a risk assessment will give you some idea on how often you need to do it and auditing recorded sheets if any

HSE's guidance HSG76 is a good start and advises on racking inspection, protection etc Free download at http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/hsg76.htm

Hi Lacey If you download the HSG76 from Johns link this will tell you what to do. Whilst it is guidance and therefore not law, you will find that if something goes wrong you will be expected to show how you met this guidance. You need to start with your risk assessment, then look at frequency of damages inspections and your annual independent inspection. I do not use the racking maintenance or installation company to do this. You may find it useful to go on a short course. The Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association run one as do The Rack Group. Hi Lacey You are right, under PUWER the racking needs to be maintained in a safe condition. You cannot do so without undertaking periodic condition checks - the frequency would be set by how much damage you are sustaining. The Storage Equipment Safety Service (SESS) can carry out conditional surveys and provide training to persons who will carry out the checks. The SEMA also produce guides to conducting racking inspections - this gives some guidance about deflection measurements and what action you should take. Colin

Thanks very much for the advice offered... I am trying to change the culture here where the warehouse staff will do weekly inspection which are documented... Small steps to begin with and the course you have wrote about I will run past the powers that be Regards

Hi Lacey07 I work for a manufacturing company and we have several large pallet racking units in our facility. We check the racking every week and record this, and then we use a SEMA approved racking inspector to carry out an annual inspection.
