Work positioning / restraint lanyards - the difference?

Hi all,
I am trying to establish any differences between these two items. Both appear to do the same thing - enable the user to 'position' themselves ultimately so they cannot fall.

I was led to believe we use restraint lanyards in our organisation, although, now I wonder do we use actually use work positioning lanyards?

We use adjustable versions (2m) so positioning can be changed subject to the hazard locations (does this infer work positioning as opposed to work restraint?)....

Can anyone enlighten me please.

Hi Simon,

my thoughts:

work positioning lanyards are typically used to support the worker, i.e wrapping the lanyard around a wooden pole to allow the the linesman to lean back and free up his hands for work.

Fall restraint stops the worker reaching an unprotected edge.

work positioning belts are often used as a restraint system (depending on the design).

work positioning would also prevent a worker reaching an unprotected edge (if it is set up correctly)?

I still cannot see the difference unless it is purely about a single length lanyard vs. an adjustable length lanyard?

I was always under the impression that work positioning was the somewhat more formal name for sitting down whilst doing rope access e.g. bosuns chair etc. - but essentially putting someone in suspension to access their place of work. Equally that could be applied to the situation darmour suggested where a linesman is in a position where they can fall, but is protected from that fall by being supported.

I've never come across the term being substituted for restraint directly - where obviously the person can't get to a position where they can fall. They're two different things.....although I can see no obvious reason why the same bit of kit couldn't be used for both (in theory!)

Hi

When I have used work position, as Darmour said, this was to enable me to remove my hands from holding on so that I could work, and the lanyard took the weight. I used it in conjunction with a fall arrest harness. You can't use a fall arrest harness for this as your weight in your work position may start to deploy the arrest device (unstictch it).

The same lanyard could also be used as a restraint lanyard in a VNA order picker attached to attach to a belt and ensure the picker could not go outside of the cab.

However, not all lanyards will do both jobs. So check with your supplier of equipment what you should use.

From what you are describing you are using the lanyard as a restraint lanyard.
