Hi There,
I am looking at our fleet management and drivers and would like to improve upon our current system.
What do you guys do to manage driver risk assessment and training for sales forces?
Kind regards,
James

A first step is to understand who amongst your drivers is a risk, we use a tool called the driver risk index, available from a company called Drivermetrics, which looks at a range of risk behaviours and coping mechanisms, those that are higher on the list are then subject to specific additional training and supervision. The do a specific fleet driver tool, as well as tools used by the police, commercial fleets etc.

For sales/company car drivers I always recommend to my customers to consider the RoSPA Driver Development course.
I did it myself some years ago, they take you round town, country and motorway. I still mentally refer to it whenever I'm going along country roads/bends at 60mph or on motorways changing from lane 3 to lane 2 !

I would recommend RoSPA for advanced driver training. Their training has an expiry date based upon the drivers achievement, where others have no future retesting

On risk assessment, I would go with the RoSPA criteria of the vehicle, the driver and the journey as the headings for the assessment.
Advanced driving is to be encouraged, but at the least some defensive driver training would be wise. As far as advanced tuition is concerned, from my experience (car and motorcycle), the IAM do it better.

We have some very detailed and specific needs (4 x 4 Ambulance driver training for example) but we are also looking at risk assessment and simpler stuff for our general drivers. We have invited three organisations to talk to us, and while I have to agree that RoSPA and IAM are very good, there are cheaper commercial alternatives out there. For example, DrivingMonitor will do risk evaluation at less than £20 per head,
