Morning all, Can I please ask if there are any rebar specialists out there, with regards to methods of 'cutting rebar'. All along we have been using a saw to cut the rebar with not very many issues, but now, it appear that this task is becoming somewhat more difficult for the guys at site level, whereby as you are all aware a hot works permit is required, which takes a day to clear with the main contractor (if the right person is on site to sign off), no works can be done after 3pm, a person trained in the use of extinguishers needs to be in attendance but not the person carrying out the cutting task. Therefore the steelfixing foreman has asked me to look into alternatives, so far the electric cutters have been a no no as sometime they don't have power on site, the battery cutters again are a no no seen as they cannot charge them. SO I am now looking into handheld hydraulic rebar cutters. Has anyone used these? Are they any good? How often do the blades last ? Do you know of a company that supplies them?? Thanks in advance.

Just as an aside: are you aware of the welding problems with rebar that is originating from China?

As far as I'm aware, portable rebar cutters are all hydraulic in operation, but electrically powered - you'll need a generator. Nice piece of kit though (many models available) and quick. Should reduce HAVS exposure significantly for operatives.

The item he is after is'nt electric, its a hand held man operated tool, I have found some on 'e-bay' ! But I would prefer a proper company that can come in, and demonstrate the use, and let the guys test it out before purchase. If we go down the route of electric, then we PAT testing, generator creating noise and requiring sound barriers......

Why are you cutting rebar? The first step is to question what the designers are doing regarding the bending bar schedules. Get it right and you will reduce the need for cutting on site dramatically. With regards to hydraulic cutter the Fire Brigade use them so I suspect you can source some up to the job.

Just a few questions What diameter rebar? How many cuts in a day? Why are portable generators not allowed obn site if Stihl saws are? Are you sure you need a hot works permit, what's going to catch fire? (there may be some source of fuel but often these permits are rquired as amatter of course rather than as a need).

Various Various (this particular time, it was cutting down the rebar where the piles have been cropped Gennys are allowed, but its additional cost for hire and PAT testing every 3 months Yes, main contractor requirements (but you are right, in an open site, with nothing flammable in the vicinity)

Lawlee In the past I have used battery operated re bar cutters. You can hire these from most of the national hire shops on a side note the HSE would question why you are using a sthi saw and exposing operatives to HAVS , you should look at using alternative methods to reduce the HAVS exposure to ALARP one further note should the HSE stop your site and Issue a notice you could hire /by a lot of equipment. Or pat test leads. Christ
