We have employed a consultant company to help us manage the health and safety within the workplace.
The company have employed these since before I had started.

The consultant came to the site carried out an audit which took less than two hours, then went away and wrote up what they thought we should do and questioned my actions / risk assessments etc.

I have wrote to the company asking for proof of competency and insurance etc, which should have been completed prior to them coming on site.

The consultant is not on the consultants register, but stated they are a member of IOSH. It has taken two weeks to gain a membership number, and upon checking I have been told that they are no longer registered with IOSH.

Please let this serve as a warning to others, no matter what the trade - just because someone says they are competent etc, ensure you get proof and that you confirm it is correct.

Why are you employing somebody David.....you sound 'competent' yourself!

From experience, I would still ask questions of persons even if they are on the 'consultants register'

Being a member of IOSH isn't proof of competence just as questioning someone's risk assessment isn't proof of incompetence.

And the "consultants register" is also no measure of competence, despite its intentions.

Is it possible that the 2 hours did actually suffice to suggest that the original assessments and subsequent actions needed tweaking?

Just playing devil's advocate here as I have absolutely no idea on what is the real situation at your workplace.

However, falsely claiming membership of IOSH would be enough in my view to rescind whatever contract you may have with their organisation.

Yes but he declared he was a member and he wasn't, can't trust someone like that

Reiterate what Colossians 1:14 states.

If you haven't got one already, get your company to but you an iPad, download iAuditor to find a suitable audit or if you have one already upload it and go for it. I have heard some people say that you really can't 'tick your own boxes' which to some degree I can understand but if you can be impartial or failing that get someone internally who is, you'd be much better off.

Hopefully you have also formally alerted IOSH to the situation you came across?

I was in a similar position when I joined a 5FKphconstruction company as their first H&S Manager, they had a contract with an agency and could not cancel it.

The agency had provided a Policy document with safe working practices and generic assessments but as I went through that I realised it was not good enough.

We allowed the contract to die its natural death and I took full control over safety and started from scratch.

Six years ago I acquired my current role because my predecessor was caught out by a client claiming Chartered IOSH membership that he did not have. I have also discovered an assessor from a well known SSIP provider doing the same seven years ago!

Agree with what he said..... this could be a genuine mistake or deliberate misrepresentation which does non of us any good. It needs to be investigated for the reputation of us all.

Talk to membership - they should advise the best course of action.
