Hi
I have been asked to see if I can find a good external speaker to present to our board on their H&S reponsibilities etc, which they currently may think they have none!
I know I should do it but they feel they need to hear it from a external person, as it would carry more weight, on trying to change their behaviours?

Has anyone had to do the same thing , if so who did they used etc....and did it work?

Thanks in advance

done this sort of thing on many an occasion and there are specialist H&S lawyers who will undertake this exercise for U for a fee so contact one of them

Its all down to phycology as people think that they get better value if they pay for something especially from professionals*like lawyers and similar [*noting that H&S is still not officially seen as a profession where HR, lawyers etc. are!]

On many an occasion the lawyer has used my presentation and notes without any alteration except to put their name on it, but hey ho that's how things work

Does it work; well that's all down to the people involved and on most occasions in my experience things do not change

best of luck

similar to Bob - link OSH to strategic aims and values, corporate governance and issues such as the sustainable agenda. I suggest that it is a short workshop within the board meeting rather than a presentation so that the Board can 'discover and accept' what they already own! Lets get it down as a Board action rather than anecdote.

Public services can be tricky as the Board may include both paid and unpaid members, plus things change every election!

Following on from Bob's response a number of years ago I engaged the services of a lawyer who worked in the H&S field, but also had the advantage of being able to talk from a different perspective as a Deputy Coroner.
The session could easily have been led by me, but again it was felt that it was better coming from somebody else!

Did it work? Well one very positive outcome was that the Chief Exec stated to all the Directors that H&S was their responsibility & not mine as their professional adviser!

We did have to pay quite a lot for his services, but there are many law firms out there touting for business who may just do it as a freebie - good luck!

I would recommend Paul Verrico - Principal Associate at Eversheds Solicitors He has presented on a number of occasions at the AoC H&S conference and is an excellent speaker.

I used him as well to get the board interested in their responsibilities

I've used H&S lawyers too, especially Pinsent Masons who are v good and have direct experience with many corporate manslaughter cases (NB I am not linked to them in way)

Also - how about your insurance brokers as most of the large ones (eg AIG) will do this for a small nominal fee.

Interesting responses which nearly suggest a lawyer. Why not a H&S practitioner?

Most experienced practitioners have a good knowledge of the legal requirements of h&s, surely it makes sense to have a speaker who has some empathy with the subject matter.

You may get a practitioner in your area who would do it for transport costs if they need the CPD points. It might be worth the question ....
