I have recently been told that a playgroup cannot use toilet roll middles for art work and making things. They have been told to put the rolls in the freezer for 10 minutes to kill any germs/infections. Then they can be used. Under H & S I cannot see any regs that prevent playgroups, schools etc using toilet roll middles for art. Please tell me this is just another H & S Myth!

Freezing does not kill "germs". It will stop bacteria dividing, until the temperature rises..... Now, if they were to be irradiated...probably not a good idea in class... And virus is not "alive" anyway....

I am interested to know what germs there are on toilet rolls. I think that whenever someone says you can't do something you should ask for supporting proof of the reason/s why not. I doubt if you will get an answer to that question. Just like I don't think I will now.

E. coli (E. coli 0157?), S. aureus (MRSA?)... Basically anything you transfer from your backside via faecal contamination when you remove the roll depending on where the roll came from. You are then supplying these to a section of the population commonly referred to as super-spreaders who will in all probability put them in their mouth either directly or indirectly before incubating the bacteria further and pooping indiscriminately. Very much the health side of "health and safety", I would suggest. Just because there is no unguarded machinery, doesn't mean it is safe. ...Just my initial thoughts., feel free to discuss further.

H&S Gone mad! I always wonder what people think when they read these sort of things on here and look at the comments by professionals who worry about germs from them.
