Hi, apologies as I have not had time to properly research this and look at any previous posts on here, and I won't this week either but would welcome and views or pointers on this.

Can anyone tell me whether there are exemptions for turban wearing Sikhs of the wearing of head protection? If so (the Employment Act 1989 as amended rings a bell), is this in all situations? If so, how is the risk managed.

Thanks for any guidance / pointers.

Previously exempted under the Construction Hard Hat Regs which got rolled across in to the PPE Regs. This week the HSE bulletin carried an article further clarifying the position BUT specifically referring to the practice of turban wearing rather than any religious belief exemption

Thank you both, just what was needed.

Regarding the HSE link, and the comment at the bottom...(below). Does this mean that if head protection should be worn, as identified in the risk assessment, it can be refused to be worn rather than the person not working on site? Also, in construction environments where a site is a hard hat area, is it that they will be exempt from wearing one?

"Where a turban-wearing Sikh chooses not to wear the head protection provided, the exemption includes a limitation on the liability of the duty-holder should an incident occur."
