I've noticed that retail outlets are still selling domestic consumer units with plastic enclosures.

I'm pretty certain that the latest amendment to 17th Edition BS 7671 regs calls for all consumer units to have metal enclosures, so how can the retail outlets still legally be selling these non-compliant ones?

Hi Stephen,

My understanding is that any system designed after July 2015 must comply with the amended standard. However the requirement for increased fire protection (Reg 421.1.201) does not come into force until January 2016.

421.1.201, ONLY applies to dwellings and attached outbuildings where there is a risk of fire being transmitted to the dwelling.
Metal CU's are NOT required for commercial nor industrial premises, unless external influences require this.

The reason for this regulation is due to incompetent installation of plastic CU's, installers not making connections correctly, and manufacturers manufacturing consumer units out of flammable polymer materials.

If you require any further correct information then please ask.
