There are work activities on site where the Risk Assessment has indicated a Full Mask Respirator should be used...We bought a number of Masks, but no were near the amount to cover the entire work force, as that would be a massive expense...now, the workers are complaining that they wont wear a mask that has been used by someone else, regardless if it has been cleaned, due to hygiene reasons...Are they in the right, or can we insist they have to wear them as part of their job???

They normally come with decontamination instructions and therefore can be used by others. If they don't wear it they are breaching section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work act. In the prison we did it with the fire fighting otherwise we would need 700 sets and they would of had to carry their own.

They are wrong IMHO, but that counts for nought; they ain't gonna wear them are they? Limit the task to those who will comply (obviously!). Pay them a bonus (say time & a half) Concerns will evaporate.

I can imagine that people might complain especially if the equipment was in regular use, unlike for example the breathing apparatus discussed in post 2 which was held (I assume) for emergency use only. Although it is possible to decontaminate a respirator, I would always be wary about how effective this was as it would have to be done after every use, thoroughly and effectively. The time (and therefore cost) taken to do this might offset any saving in extensive sharing of the devices. Have you considered positive pressure face masks, which might be suitable and are much easier to keep clean?

Yes they werefor emergencies but they were still shared as was the paint booth RPE. The question was is it ok for it to be shared and the answer is yes, I am not sure I would be happy sharing it, but as the OP stated the cost to the company would be to high. Not sure if they consulted with the employees befoe the purchase, but they should of. It is still a breach of Section 7.

I don't think that people should get a bonus for complying with the law... ;)
