Hi All Been chatting to a few different H&S recruitment companies and trying to explain the difference between a H&S advisor and a health and safety consultant working for a health and safety consultancy. I have listed things like inter-personnel skills, ability to work autonomously, ability to travel, being adaptable to work with different clients and sometimes in different industry sectors, good time management and good IT skills. If you were looking for a H&S consultant then what would you put in the job description? Do you think it differs depending on what area of the company it is as we are based in London/SE area? Hi Darryl As Managing Director of a H&S Consultancy company employing 2 full time H&S Consultants with associate consultants available when required I would expect to see the following; - ability to understand all areas of industry i.e. sectors such as construction, manufacturing, logistics. - computer literate with ability to produce documents neatly and easy to follow. - well presented appearance looking professional and not like they are the labourers doing the work. - self motivated able to manage their diaries to ensure each client is catered for. - willing to travel and stay away from home overnight from time to time. - be themselves and show good interpersonal skills. - able to stand and hold a meeting by chairing the meeting. - give training sessions. - ability to talk to everyone in the clients business from top to bottom with the same respect. - most importantly LISTEN to what they are being told and don't self diagnose until they understand the problem. - if they don't have the answer to a problem at the time make sure the client is aware that they will find out the answer and go back to them with it. I hope this brief summary helps.

Darryl, if you are recruiting then you may wish to take a look at the thread on the Discussion forum on the topic of Agencies. The experiences related there may give you something to think about and whether you will be able to get access to the best people for your job.

Working as a consultant for a consultancy business in a past life I would say providing high quality, client focused health and safety advice and assistance to a wide variety of businesses across the UK. The development of new business, new products and initiatives whilst promoting added value to existing client relationships. Providing onsite health and safety audits, risk assessments and inspections Offering guidance, support and training to clients Developing and reviewing health and safety policies and procedures Preparing and generating risk assessments and safe work method statements Writing topical health and safety articles and legislation updates to advise clients There are also any company internal responsibilities i.e. you might want them to look after the consultancy business health and safety and then any training skills.
